As we approach the end of the year, I'm going to be posting about new movies of science fiction and fantasy coming in 2012. The first on my list is John Carter of Mars (of course). I've been waiting for this one.
Plot Summary: Civil War vet John Carter is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior.
This movie is based on a story published in 1964 and written by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Taylor Kitsch plays lead role.

I first heard of "John Carter" when I read Heinlein's "Number Of The Beast," so I don't know very much about the series. The movie sometimes looks good to me, sometimes not.
But I believe that it's not meant to be our actual Mars.
I'm definitely excited about this one and have been following the leaks made on BLASTR. I have never read the John Carter books. However, I did read this article where Disney said that if this movie doesn't make $750 million, they will kill the franchise. So it needs to make more than that to warrant a sequel. That's a pretty tall order. There are only a handful of movies that crack the $750 million mark.
I'm looking forward to this as well, although I think it is significantly older than 1964. I read it a few years ago and seemed to think it was close to a hundred years old. Early 1900's maybe.
Anyway, Pixar's first live action movie if I'm not mistaken. Should be interesting.
Oh, forgot to mention. Assuming my timeline of publication is more or less correct, the breathable atmosphere makes more sense, as it was commonly believed in a lot of circles at the time that Mars was hospitable towards animal life (as was Venus)
This series first came out in 1911. The original John Carter story took place after the Civil War. The books are still a good read and can be found in electronic format as well.

I highly recommend it as a great example of early SciFi.
